Interpreteerijad are individuals who facilitate communication between people speaking different languages. Their role involves listening to spoken utterances in one language and then conveying the meaning of those utterances in another language. There are several modes of interpretation. Simultaneous interpretation is where the interpreter speaks the translated version almost concurrently with the original speaker, often with the aid of specialized equipment like soundproof booths and headsets. Consecutive interpretation involves the interpreter listening to a segment of speech, pausing, and then rendering the message in the target language. Liaison interpretation, or bilateral interpretation, is typically used in smaller settings like meetings or doctor's appointments, where the interpreter relays messages back and forth between two parties.

The skills of an interpreter go beyond linguistic proficiency. They must possess excellent memory, concentration, note-taking abilities (for consecutive interpretation), and public speaking skills. They must also maintain strict impartiality and confidentiality, ensuring that the message is conveyed accurately and without personal bias. Interpreters often undergo specialized training and certification to hone their skills and adhere to professional standards. The demand for skilled interpreters is high globally, supporting international relations, trade, and access to services for non-native speakers.
