Interoperative

Interoperative is an adjective formed from the prefix inter- (between) and operative (relating to operation). It is relatively uncommon in standard usage and is often encountered as a variant or misapplication of more established terms such as interoperable, interoperability, or intraoperative.

In computing and information technology contexts, interoperative is sometimes used informally to describe systems, software, or processes designed to operate or work together across different platforms, vendors, or protocols. In these cases, the clearer and more widely accepted terms are interoperable (adjective) and interoperability (noun), which denote the ability of disparate systems to exchange information and use it effectively.

In medical contexts, interoperative is rare and can be easily confused with intraoperative, the established term that refers to events or procedures occurring during a surgical operation. Because of this potential confusion, intraoperative should be used when describing activities during surgery.

Usage guidance: because interoperative is uncommon and can be ambiguous, writers and speakers are advised to choose more precise alternatives—interoperable/interoperability for technical and systems contexts, and intraoperative for surgical contexts—unless there is a specific, clearly defined local meaning for interoperative.
