Interkalointiin

Interkalointiin, often translated as intercalation, refers to the process where atoms, ions, or molecules are inserted between the layers of a layered material. This insertion does not typically break the covalent bonds within the layers themselves, but rather occupies the spaces between them. The intercalated species are held in place by weaker forces such as van der Waals forces or electrostatic interactions.

For example, in battery technology, lithium ions intercalate into the layered structure of cathode materials like lithium cobalt oxide. This reversible intercalation and deintercalation of ions is the fundamental mechanism behind the operation of many lithium-ion batteries.
