This phenomenon is often observed in situations where individuals prioritize the means to achieve a goal over the goal itself. The term was first coined by psychologist Daniel Gilbert in his 2006 book "Stumbling on Happiness."

One classic example of an instrumental illusion is the "IKEA effect." People tend to overvalue items they have assembled themselves, even if they are identical to store-bought versions. This is because the process of assembly is seen as instrumental to the ownership of the item, leading individuals to place more value on the means (the assembly process) than the end result (the item itself).

Another example is the "endowment effect," where individuals place a higher value on items they own compared to identical items they do not own. This bias can lead to irrational decisions, such as refusing a fair offer to buy an item from someone else because they own it.

For instance, people may engage in prosocial behaviors (acts of kindness or helpfulness) not because they inherently enjoy helping others, but because they want to be seen as good or moral individuals.
