Inspektsioon

Inspektsioon is a term used in Estonian and related languages to denote an official government body tasked with inspection and regulatory oversight within a defined field. An inspektsioon usually functions as an inspectorate or regulatory agency responsible for enforcing laws, monitoring compliance, and promoting safety and standards among individuals and organizations.

The word derives from the broader concept of inspection and is cognate with similar terms in other European languages, such as Inspektion in German and inspectie in Dutch. In many jurisdictions, inspektsioon-type bodies operate across sectors such as public health, occupational safety, environmental protection, consumer protection, and financial or business compliance. They may be created to ensure uniform application of rules, protect public welfare, and provide a mechanism for accountability.

Typical powers and activities include planning and conducting on-site inspections, reviewing documents and records, collecting samples or data, and issuing notices, licenses, or corrective orders.
