Inselbergen

Inselberg is a German term that translates to "island mountain." It refers to isolated, steep-sided hills or mountains that rise abruptly from a surrounding plain. These landforms are typically remnants of a more extensive highland that has been eroded over geological time. The softer surrounding rock erodes away, leaving the harder, more resistant rock of the inselberg standing as a solitary feature.

Prominent examples of inselbergs can be seen in locations such as the American Southwest, Australia, and Africa. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, in Australia, is a famous example of an inselberg. The formation of inselbergs is a slow geological process that can take millions of years.
