Inplay

Inplay, often written as in-play or live betting, is a form of gambling in which bets are placed on a sports event while it is in progress. Odds are updated in real time to reflect the current state of play, allowing bets on events within the match or game, such as the next goal or point, the eventual match winner, and a wide range of prop and aggregate markets (for example total goals, corners, cards, or player statistics).

Markets in play can be dynamic and may be paused during stoppages or pivotal moments to protect liquidity and fairness. Wagers can be placed and settled as the action unfolds, with bookmakers using real-time data feeds and pricing algorithms to adjust odds and manage risk. Many operators also offer cash-out features, enabling bettors to settle a position before the event finishes.

Inplay has become widespread across many sports, notably football (soccer), tennis, basketball, and rugby, and is facilitated by online platforms and mobile apps. The practice grew with improvements in streaming video, data delivery, and speed of betting systems, with betting exchanges and traditional bookmakers both offering extensive live markets.
