Injetividade

Injetividade, also known as injectivity, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in the field of functions and mapping theories. A function is said to be injective if different inputs produce different outputs. Formally, a function \(f: A \rightarrow B\) is injective if, for any \(a_1, a_2 \in A\), whenever \(f(a_1) = f(a_2)\), it implies that \(a_1 = a_2\). In other words, no two distinct elements in the domain map to the same element in the codomain.

Injectivity is a crucial property in many mathematical contexts because it ensures a one-to-one correspondence between elements of the domain and the range. Functions with this property are also called one-to-one functions. Injective functions are important in areas such as algebra, analysis, and topology, where they often relate to invertibility. An inverse function exists only for injective functions when the function is considered over suitable subsets, allowing for the reversal of the mapping process.

Not all functions are injective; functions that assign the same output to multiple inputs are called non-injective or many-to-one functions. For example, the squaring function \(f(x) = x^2\) is not injective over the entire set of real numbers because both positive and negative values of \(x\) map to the same value.

Understanding injectivity helps in analyzing the behavior of functions, especially in determining whether a function can be reversed or uniquely identified by its output values. It serves as a foundational concept in mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and various applied disciplines.
