The concept covers not only genetic inheritance but also epigenetic marks, parental effects, and social-cultural transmission such as learning, norms, behaviors, language, wealth, and social status. Proponents use inheritanceity to model how ancestral profiles influence descendants through interacting biological and environmental pathways, and to compare the combined impact of these channels across populations or time periods.

Definition and scope: Inheritanceity refers to the overall propensity of descendants to resemble or inherit certain traits due to ancestral influence, regardless of the specific mechanism. It is distinguished from heritability in genetics, which estimates the fraction of phenotypic variation attributable to genetic factors within a particular environment; inheritanceity aims to quantify cross-domain transmission, acknowledging that non-genetic factors can mirror or amplify genetic effects.
