Informasjonsskilt typically combine concise text with pictograms. To support quick understanding, many signs use standardized symbols in accordance with ISO 7010, high-contrast colors, and legible typefaces. Content is often multilingual where necessary, with priority given to the local language.

Design and placement are guided by legibility and accessibility. Signs should be placed at eye level, unobstructed, and well lit, with durable materials suitable for the environment. Regular maintenance and replacement of worn signs are common practices to preserve clarity and reliability.

In Norway and other European contexts, information signs often follow international standards for safety and information signs, while also reflecting national requirements for language and accessibility. This may include considerations for visually impaired users, such as tactile elements or Braille where appropriate, and clear signaling for evacuation routes and service points.

Common examples include directions to exits and restrooms, locations of reception or service desks, opening hours, address or contact information, accessibility information, and general notices about services. While hazard and prohibition signs are governed by separate categories, information signs frequently accompany them to guide behavior and navigate spaces effectively.
