Inflators

An inflator is a device or mechanism designed to increase the pressure of a gas within a space by introducing more gas. Inflators are used in a wide range of applications, from automotive tires and bicycle tubes to sporting equipment, air cushions, and safety systems. They can be powered manually or by electricity and may use ambient air, compressed air from a compressor, or compressed gas cartridges.

Manual inflators rely on a piston or diaphragm to compress air and push it into a tire or other chamber. Common forms include hand pumps and foot pumps. Electric inflators use motors and compressors to deliver higher flow rates and often feature built-in pressure gauges and auto shutoff at a chosen pressure. Cartridge-based inflators use CO2 cartridges for rapid inflation, frequently employed for bicycles, inflatable equipment, or emergency kits.

Inflators appear in both consumer and industrial contexts. In vehicles, airbag systems use inflators that rapidly release gas to inflate the cushion in a crash. In consumer products, inflators service tires, air mattresses, inflatable boats, balls, and other inflated gear. Some specialized inflators are designed for workshop or factory environments to pressurize pneumatic tools or test chambers.

Key components commonly include a reservoir or housing, a valve or nozzle interface, a pressure gauge or display, and a power source or gas cartridge. Safety and accuracy are emphasized, with features such as automatic shutoff, pressure relief, and compatibility with the target valve types. Proper use involves adhering to manufacturer specifications and recommended pressure levels.
