Inertianmittausyksikkö, often abbreviated as IMU, is a device used to measure and describe an object's motion. It typically comprises accelerometers and gyroscopes. Accelerometers measure linear acceleration, which is the rate of change of velocity along a straight line, while gyroscopes measure angular velocity, which is the rate of change of orientation around an axis. By combining data from these sensors, an IMU can determine an object's orientation, velocity, and angular position. Some IMUs also include magnetometers, which measure magnetic field strength and direction, providing a reference for absolute orientation.

The primary function of an IMU is to track the movement of a device. This is achieved by continuously sensing and recording the accelerations and rotations experienced by the device. Sophisticated algorithms, often referred to as sensor fusion, are then employed to process this raw sensor data. These algorithms integrate the measurements over time to estimate the object's trajectory and orientation relative to a starting point or a known reference frame. The accuracy of the orientation estimation is crucial for many applications, and the algorithms aim to minimize drift and errors that can accumulate from sensor inaccuracies.

IMUs are widely used across various industries. In consumer electronics, they are essential for smartphones, tablets, and game controllers, enabling features like screen rotation, motion sensing in games, and augmented reality experiences. In aviation and aerospace, IMUs are critical for navigation and stabilization systems in aircraft, drones, and spacecraft. They are also employed in robotics for robot navigation and control, in automotive systems for stability control and autonomous driving, and in medical devices for patient monitoring and rehabilitation. The development of smaller, more accurate, and less power-hungry IMUs continues to drive innovation in these fields.
