Inertgasassisted refers to a manufacturing process where an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, is introduced into a mold cavity during the injection molding of plastics. This inert gas is typically applied under pressure after the molten plastic has been injected. The primary purpose of this gas assist is to improve the dimensional stability and reduce internal stresses within the molded part.

The inert gas fills voids and internal channels that would otherwise be occupied by molten plastic, effectively creating a hollow or partially hollow structure. This reduction in the amount of plastic needed, and the resulting internal pressure from the gas, leads to several benefits. These include a lighter finished product, reduced warpage, and a stronger, more rigid part. The gas assist can also help to minimize sink marks, which are surface depressions that can occur over bosses or thick sections of plastic.

This technique is particularly useful for producing large, relatively thin-walled parts that are prone to warping or require high stiffness. Examples include furniture components, automotive interior parts, and appliance housings. While the initial setup for inert gas assisted injection molding can be more complex and costly than traditional injection molding, the benefits in terms of material savings, improved part quality, and reduced cycle times can make it a cost-effective solution for certain applications. The precise control of gas pressure and timing is critical to achieving optimal results.
