Indirekteffekt, also known as an indirect effect, refers to a phenomenon in various scientific disciplines—particularly psychology, sociology, economics, and ecology—where a change in one variable influences another variable not through a direct relationship, but via an intervening third variable. This concept is central to understanding complex systems where multiple factors interact in non-linear ways.

In research, indirect effects are often analyzed using statistical methods such as mediation analysis. This approach helps researchers determine whether the relationship between an independent variable (e.g., a treatment or intervention) and a dependent variable (e.g., an outcome) is partially or fully explained by a mediator variable (e.g., a psychological process or environmental factor). For example, in psychology, a stress-reduction program might indirectly improve job performance by first reducing anxiety, which is the mediator.

Indirect effects can also occur in ecological systems, where a change in one species (e.g., the introduction of a predator) may indirectly affect another species (e.g., a prey population) through alterations in habitat or competition dynamics. Similarly, in economics, policy interventions might indirectly influence consumer behavior by first affecting market prices or supply chains.

Distinguishing between direct and indirect effects is important for accurate causal inference.
