Spelling and usage vary by language: English typically uses indicators; German uses Indikatoren; Dutch uses indicatoren. In practice, Indikatorens refer to the broad class of measures used to monitor, compare, or forecast outcomes.

Indicators can be quantitative or qualitative, and may be single metrics or part of a composite indicator set.
