Indexfonds and ETFs are investment vehicles designed to track the performance of a benchmark index. An index fund is typically a mutual fund that seeks to mirror the return of a specific market index, such as the S&P 500, with low operating costs. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a fund that trades on a stock exchange, offering intraday pricing and the ability to buy or sell throughout the trading day, often with lower expense ratios than traditional mutual funds.

Replication methods vary. Full replication holds all index components in the same weights; sampling uses a representative subset; synthetic (or swap-based) replication uses derivatives to achieve the same exposure. ETFs rely on a creation and redemption mechanism that uses authorized participants to keep the market price in line with the fund's net asset value (NAV).

Costs are typically low relative to actively managed funds, with expense ratios the main ongoing charge. ETFs may incur trading costs such as commissions and bid-ask spreads. Tax treatment varies by jurisdiction and by structure; in many markets, ETFs are designed to be relatively tax-efficient.

Use and risk: Indexfonds/ETFs provide broad diversification, transparency, and predictable exposure to an index. They are commonly used as core holdings in long-term portfolios. Risks include tracking error, market risk, liquidity risk for less liquid indices, and, for synthetic ETFs, counterparty risk.

Examples of popular indices include broad market indices (e.g., those tracking large-cap stocks), sector indices, bond indices, and commodity indices. The choice of index determines the fund's exposure, cost characteristics, and tax treatment.
