Implantointiin

Implantointiin is the illative form of the Finnish noun implantointi, meaning “into implantation” or “for implantation.” In English-language discussions, the concept is called implantation, the act of placing an implant into the body to replace missing tissue, restore function, or support a medical device.

Implantation is used across medicine and dentistry. Dental implants anchor artificial teeth to the jawbone; orthopedic implants replace or support bones and joints; cardiac, neural, and cochlear implants support or restore physiological functions; biomarkers or tissue implants are also studied in regenerative medicine.

Planning relies on imaging, anatomy, and biomechanics. The procedure typically involves surgical placement of the implant into bone or soft tissue, followed by healing and osseointegration or tissue integration, and subsequent attachment of prosthetic components or devices.

Risks include infection, inflammation, device migration or failure, allergic reaction, and complications from anesthesia. Success depends on site, patient health, and post-operative care.

Regulatory oversight includes clinical trials and approvals by authorities such as the FDA in the United States or CE marking in the European Union; post-market surveillance is common. Ethical considerations include informed consent and equitable access. Historical note: osseointegration of dental implants was popularized in the 1960s by Per-Ingvar Brånemark, marking a milestone in implant dentistry.
