Idolisation

Idolisation refers to the process of regarding someone or something as an idol—an object of devotion, admiration, or reverence. In secular usage it denotes intense adoration that can resemble worship, while in religious contexts it relates to the veneration of sacred images or figures. The term derives from idol with the -isation suffix, and in British English is written idolisation.

In everyday life, idolisation commonly centers on public figures such as musicians, actors, athletes, or influencers. It can also apply to fictional characters or brands. Followers may imitate appearance, values, or behaviours, and engage in fan activities, creation of fan artifacts, or collective rituals; media exposure often reinforces idealised portrayals.

Psychologically, idolisation involves cognitive and social processes such as idealisation, parasocial relationships, and social learning. It can motivate achievement or prosocial behaviour but also risk unrealistic standards, loss of critical judgement, parasocial loneliness, stalking, or commercial exploitation.

Cultural and ethical considerations vary. In religious traditions, excessive idolisation challenges doctrines about divine transcendence or iconoclasm. In contemporary society, heightened idolisation raises concerns about consumerism, privacy, and mental health, but it can also provide inspiration, role models, and charitable engagement when balanced with critical awareness.

Overall, idolisation describes a spectrum from benign admiration to excessive reverence, shaped by personal psychology, media environments, and cultural norms.
