Identitetsprogram is a Swedish government initiative aimed at establishing a secure and unified system of identification for residents and citizens. It focuses on creating a reliable framework for verifying personal identity online, thereby reducing reliance on paper documents and strengthening data protection.

The core of the identitetsprogram is a national ID card system that integrates biometric data with cryptographic certificates. Cardholders receive a contactless smart card that can be used for digital authentication across a wide range of public and private services. The program also supports electronic identification (e‑ID) solutions such as BankID, which allow individuals to sign documents, access healthcare records, and complete financial transactions securely.

An essential component of the program is its adherence to European Union standards for data security and privacy, including compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
