Identifikationskarten
Identifikationskarten are official documents that verify a person’s identity. They are issued by government authorities and are used in everyday life for services such as opening bank accounts, accessing public or private services, and, in many cases, travel. A typical card lists the holder’s full name, date and place of birth, nationality, a portrait photograph, and a signature, along with a unique document number, the issuing authority, and an expiration date. Many modern versions also contain a biometric data carrier (chip) that enables electronic identification and authentication in online services.
In German-speaking contexts the term covers national identity cards as well as other official forms of identification.
