Iceover

Iceover is a term used to describe the phenomenon of ice accumulation on surfaces, particularly during periods of freezing temperatures. This can occur on roads, bridges, power lines, and other outdoor structures. The formation of iceover is typically a result of precipitation, such as rain or snow, coming into contact with surfaces that are at or below the freezing point of water.

Several factors can contribute to the severity of iceover. The temperature of the surface, the ambient air temperature, and the type and duration of precipitation all play a role. When supercooled water droplets, which remain liquid below their freezing point, encounter a surface, they can rapidly freeze. This can lead to a smooth, translucent layer of ice, often referred to as glaze ice, or a more opaque, granular ice depending on the conditions.

Iceover can have significant consequences. On roadways, it creates hazardous driving conditions, leading to increased accident rates. On power lines, ice accumulation adds weight, which can cause them to sag or break, resulting in power outages. Bridges and overpasses are particularly susceptible to iceover due to their exposure to cold air from all sides. De-icing agents, such as salt or sand, are commonly used to mitigate the dangers of iceover on transportation infrastructure. Winter weather forecasting plays a crucial role in preparing for and responding to potential iceover events.
