IUT

IUT stands for Institut universitaire de technologie, or University Institute of Technology, and refers to a network of teaching and research units within public French universities. IUTs are designed to provide professionally oriented higher education in science, engineering, information technology, and related fields. They emphasize practical instruction, laboratory work, and close ties with industry through internships, projects with partner companies, and applied research.

Structure and programs: Each IUT offers programs that historically led to the Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie (DUT). Since the reform of professional tracks within the Licence–Bachelor–Master framework, most IUTs now deliver the three-year Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie (BUT) instead of the DUT, with the transition completed at different paces by institution and field. The curriculum combines theory with hands-on coursework, project work, and work placements to prepare graduates for professional roles or further study.

Fields and pedagogy: IUTs provide a range of applied disciplines, including engineering technologies, information technology, business administration, and other applied sciences. Programs aim to develop technical competence, problem solving, teamwork, and adaptability to industry needs. Internships and partner projects are a central component of the learning experience.

Admission and outcomes: Entrants are typically students who have completed secondary education and seek a university-based, professionally oriented program. Graduates may pursue further study in licences or master’s programs or enter the workforce directly in technical, administrative, or managerial roles across various sectors.
