The concept emphasizes that asset management relies on timely, accurate signals about inventory, usage, compliance, and financial aspects rather than on a single source of truth.

Signals can cover hardware attributes such as serial numbers, model, and location; software inventory including installed products, versions, and licenses; usage metrics like end-user assignments and deployment status; contractual data such as license entitlements and maintenance contracts; financials including acquisition cost and depreciation; and lifecycle indicators such as warranty, end-of-life, and disposal.

Data sources and integration: ITAMsignalen aggregates data from discovery tools, software inventory systems, procurement, CMDB, helpdesk, and HR/asset-assignments to create enriched signals. Effective use requires data normalization, deduplication, and lineage tracking.

Applications: They support license optimization, compliance reporting, software metering, asset lifecycle planning, chargeback or showback, and risk management. Signals enable proactive alerts for renewals, end-of-support dates, or unvetted deployments.

Governance and challenges: Ensuring data quality, privacy, and security is essential. Standard definitions, consistent naming, and access controls help. Common challenges include data gaps, fragmentation across tools, and the need for timely updates.
