ISPPipeline

ISPPipeline refers to the sequence of image processing stages performed by an image signal processor (ISP) on sensor data to convert raw pixel data into viewable images. It is a core component of modern digital cameras, smartphones, and other imaging devices, enabling real-time processing with attention to color accuracy, noise suppression, and detail preservation.

A typical ISPPipeline includes stages such as sensor demosaicing (debayering) to produce a full-color image from CFA data; lens shading and vignetting correction; defective pixel correction; black level calibration; white balance adjustment; color space conversion and gamma correction; noise reduction (spatial, temporal) and sharpening; tone mapping for HDR or wide dynamic range; and, optionally, exposure fusion, multi-frame denoising, color management, and image stabilization aided by temporal data. Some implementations also include face/scene detection, color grading, and compression or encoding for formats like JPEG or HEIF.

Architectures vary, but pipelines are implemented in dedicated hardware inside System-on-Chips or run as software on general-purpose cores with hardware accelerators. They are designed for low latency and fixed throughput to support live preview and capture. Calibration data, sensor characteristics, and user or application settings drive the pipeline through a configuration graph or register map.

Applications include consumer cameras, smartphones, automotive cameras, and security systems. Challenges involve balancing noise reduction with detail retention, managing power and memory bandwidth, ensuring color fidelity across lighting, and maintaining stability across frame sequences.
