ISISOSPF

ISISOSPF is a term used to describe the interoperability between the IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) interior gateway protocols within a network. It is not a formal protocol or standard, but rather a set of configuration practices that enable routing information to be exchanged between domains running different protocols. IS-IS and OSPF are both link-state IGPs used to determine shortest paths within an autonomous system. By enabling redistribution of routes across the protocols at border routers, networks can share reachability information while preserving domain-specific routing policies.

Implementation of ISISOSPF involves running both IS-IS and OSPF on border or redistribution routers. Routes are redistributed between the two protocols, typically controlled with policy statements or route maps. Route tagging is often used to prevent routing loops and to track the origin of routes. Metrics and administrative distances are tuned to influence path selection, and filtering helps avoid leaking internal or private routes. Compatibility considerations include addressing schemes, MTU requirements, and authentication methods to ensure secure and reliable operation.

Common use cases for ISISOSPF include migration between protocols (for example, moving from OSPF to IS-IS or vice versa), network mergers that combine different protocol domains, and large, multi-vendor environments where separate domains must interoperate. While redistribution enables gradual transition and interoperability, it can increase configuration complexity and affect convergence. Proper planning, clear redistribution policies, careful ABR design, and ongoing monitoring are typically employed to mitigate risks such as routing oscillations or suboptimal paths.
