IOAT

IOAT, or Intel Optane Memory Acceleration Technology, is a hardware and software solution developed by Intel that uses non-volatile memory to enhance the performance of traditional storage devices, primarily hard disk drives (HDDs). It acts as a cache, storing frequently accessed data closer to the CPU for faster retrieval.

The technology typically involves a small, fast Optane memory module installed in an M.2 slot on the motherboard. This module works in conjunction with Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology) software to intelligently identify and move data that is frequently used by the operating system and applications onto the Optane module. When the system needs this data, it can access it from the Optane module significantly faster than from a slower HDD, leading to quicker boot times, faster application loading, and improved overall system responsiveness.

IOAT is designed to bridge the performance gap between the speed of solid-state drives (SSDs) and the cost-effectiveness and higher capacity of HDDs. It allows users to experience some of the performance benefits of an SSD at a lower overall cost, especially when paired with a large capacity HDD for bulk storage. The system intelligently manages what data is cached, so users don't need to manually select files. Its effectiveness is most pronounced in scenarios involving regular access to the same set of applications and files.
