IFACn

IFACn is a term used in some discussions to denote a proposed network of national affiliates within the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). It is not an officially established body of IFAC, and there is no formal charter or governance structure as of current usage. The acronym combines IFAC with a prior idea of a national layer, indicating an intended national-level coordination that would complement IFAC’s existing governance.

The concept originated in forums addressing coordination among IFAC’s national member organizations (NMOs), with aims to harmonize educational and research activities across countries and to streamline joint initiatives. It is used primarily in policy discussions rather than as a defined program with formal procedures.

In informal descriptions, IFACn is seen as a decentralized network with representation from IFAC’s NMOs. Decisions would typically require consensus among regional representatives and coordination with IFAC’s central Secretariat. There is no separate legal entity or charter unless IFAC formally adopts the idea.

Potential activities associated with IFACn include regional seminars, joint statements on policy or standards, student and researcher mobility programs, shared curricula, and coordinated conferences. The network would aim to accelerate the dissemination of research results and enable cross-border collaboration among IFAC members.

If formalized, IFACn could enhance coherence across IFAC’s global footprint, but challenges include governance complexity, funding, inclusivity of smaller NMOs, and alignment with IFAC’s strategic plan. IFAC would remain the parent organization; IFACn would function as a complement rather than a replacement.
