ICMPmeddelanden, or Internet Control Message Protocol messages, are essential for network diagnostics and control. They are a supplementary protocol to the Internet Protocol (IP) and are used to send error messages and operational information indicating, for example, that a requested service is not available or that a host or router could not be reached. ICMP is not typically used by end-users directly, but rather by network devices and operating systems.

The most common use of ICMP is by the ping utility. When you ping a host, your computer sends an ICMP Echo Request message. If the host is reachable, it responds with an ICMP Echo Reply. This allows you to test connectivity and measure latency between two devices on a network. Another well-known ICMP message type is Destination Unreachable, which is sent when a packet cannot be delivered to its intended destination. This could be due to various reasons, such as a port being closed or the host being unavailable.

Other ICMP message types include Time Exceeded, which is used to indicate that a packet's time-to-live (TTL) has expired, often seen in traceroute utilities to map the path a packet takes. Redirect messages inform a host about a better route to a destination. While ICMP is crucial for network management, it can also be exploited by attackers for denial-of-service attacks or network reconnaissance, leading some network administrators to filter or block certain ICMP types.
