Höyrynvastus

Höyrynvastus, often translated as vapor resistance, is a property of materials that describes their ability to impede the passage of water vapor. It is a crucial factor in building construction, particularly in managing moisture within walls and other structures. A material with high höyrynvastus is less permeable to water vapor, meaning it will slow down the movement of moisture through it. Conversely, a material with low höyrynvastus is more permeable, allowing water vapor to pass through more easily.

The concept of höyrynvastus is closely related to the vapor permeance, which is the inverse of resistance. Permeance measures how easily vapor can pass through a material, while resistance measures how much it impedes that passage. In practical terms, understanding höyrynvastus helps designers and builders select appropriate materials to create a balanced moisture management system. For instance, in cold climates, a vapor barrier with high höyrynvastus is often installed on the warm side of insulation to prevent interior moisture from migrating into the wall cavity and condensing.

Different materials have vastly different höyrynvastus values. Common building materials like concrete, plastics, and certain types of membranes typically exhibit high resistance. Materials like wood, gypsum board, and some insulation types have lower resistance, allowing more vapor to pass. The effective höyrynvastus of a wall assembly is determined by the combined resistances of all its layers. Proper application and detailing are essential to ensure the intended vapor control is achieved.
