Hårlighet

Hårlighet refers to the degree and pattern of hair coverage on the body. It encompasses both fine vellus hair that is barely visible and thicker terminal hair in regions such as the scalp, face, chest, and limbs. Hårlighet varies widely among individuals and over a lifetime.

Hair grows from follicles in the skin. Each hair undergoes growth cycles: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest). The ratio and activity of follicles determine how densely hair appears and the thickness of hair strands. Terminal hair—coarser and longer—often replaces vellus hair after puberty in androgen-sensitive regions.

Genetics and hormones primarily shape hårlighet. Androgens promote terminal hair in many areas; estrogen and age can modulate hair growth and shedding. Population and ethnic background account for typical patterns, and sex differences are common but variable. Seasonal changes and health status can also affect perceived hair density.

Hypertrichosis is excessive hair growth anywhere on the body. Hirsutism refers to excessive terminal hair in a male-pattern distribution in women or people with female anatomy, often linked to increased androgens or conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. Hair loss or thinning, as in alopecia, reduces hårlighet.

Assessment and management of hårlighet may involve visual inspection, density counts, or imaging. People may regulate hårlighet for cosmetic reasons through shaving, waxing, depilation, or pharmacologic treatments in some cases. Cultural norms influence attitudes toward body hair and grooming.
