Hårdvarunycklar

Hårdvarunycklar, also known as hardware keys or hardware security keys, are physical devices used to enhance online security through strong authentication. They are typically small, portable devices that plug into a computer's USB port or connect wirelessly via NFC or Bluetooth. The primary function of a hårdvarunyckel is to provide a second factor of authentication, significantly increasing the security of online accounts beyond just a password.

When a user attempts to log into an account protected by a hårdvarunyckel, they will first enter their username and password. Subsequently, they will be prompted to insert their hårdvarunyckel and touch a button on it, or confirm the login through a wireless prompt on their device. This physical interaction proves the user's presence and possession of the legitimate key, making it extremely difficult for attackers to gain unauthorized access even if they have obtained the user's password.

Hårdvarunycklar employ cryptographic principles to generate and store authentication credentials securely. They often support standards like FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) and U2F (Universal 2nd Factor), which are designed to be resistant to phishing attacks. Unlike software-based two-factor authentication methods, such as SMS codes or authenticator apps, hårdvarunycklar are not susceptible to interception through SIM swapping or malware that targets software. This makes them a highly robust solution for protecting sensitive information and online identities.
