SCA occurs when the heart's electrical activity becomes chaotic, leading to an inability to pump blood effectively. An AED can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock to restore a normal rhythm. These devices are intended for use by individuals with basic training, as they provide voice and visual prompts to guide the user through the resuscitation process.

AEDs are crucial in improving survival rates from SCA. Early defibrillation is a key factor in successful resuscitation, and the presence of AEDs in public places such as airports, shopping malls, schools, and workplaces significantly increases the chances of immediate intervention before professional medical help arrives. The devices are designed to be user-friendly, making them accessible to the general public in emergency situations.

When an AED is turned on, it guides the user through the steps, including attaching electrode pads to the patient's chest. The AED then analyzes the heart rhythm and determines if a shock is required. If a shock is advised, the device instructs the user to ensure everyone is clear before pressing the shock button. The AEDs are battery-powered and are regularly checked to ensure they are in working order. Their widespread availability and ease of use have made them an indispensable tool in emergency preparedness and response for sudden cardiac arrest.
