Hyönteispurenta-allergiset, or insect bite allergies, refers to a condition where an individual experiences an adverse immune system reaction to the venom or saliva of insects. This reaction can range from mild to severe. Common culprits include stinging insects like bees, wasps, and hornets, as well as biting insects such as mosquitoes and ants.

The symptoms of an insect bite allergy vary greatly. Mild reactions often manifest as localized swelling, redness, and itching at the bite site. These symptoms typically subside within a few hours to a couple of days. More severe reactions, known as systemic reactions, can involve the entire body. These may include hives spreading beyond the immediate area, difficulty breathing, wheezing, dizziness, nausea, and a drop in blood pressure. In rare but life-threatening cases, a severe allergic reaction can lead to anaphylaxis, a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.

Diagnosis of insect bite allergy is usually made based on a person's history of reactions and confirmed through skin prick tests or specific IgE blood tests conducted by an allergist. Management strategies depend on the severity of the allergy. For individuals with a history of severe reactions, emergency medication like an epinephrine auto-injector is prescribed for immediate use in case of accidental exposure. Avoiding insect bites through protective clothing, insect repellents, and being aware of high-risk environments is crucial. For those with mild allergies, symptomatic treatment with antihistamines or corticosteroid creams may be sufficient.
