The concept is not recognized as a real taxonomic or physiological category in mainstream science.

In fictional and theoretical contexts, Hypothermians may be depicted as humanoid or non-humanoid life forms with adaptations such as antifreeze proteins, enhanced insulation from dense fur or blubber, and efficient thermoregulation through specialized vascular or metabolic pathways. Some portrayals emphasize reduced metabolic rates to conserve energy in polar winters, while others depict heightened metabolic heat production for brief bursts of activity. Cultural and technological aspects often reflect the cold setting, including insulated dwellings, gear made from hides and synthetic materials, and subsistence strategies centered on marine or hardy terrestrial resources.
