Hyperkaliämierisiko refers to the risk of developing hyperkalemia, a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of potassium in the blood. Potassium is an essential electrolyte that plays a crucial role in nerve and muscle function, including the heart. When potassium levels become too high, it can disrupt these functions, leading to serious health complications.

Several factors can increase the risk of hyperkalemia. Kidney disease is a primary concern, as the kidneys are responsible for filtering excess potassium from the body. Impaired kidney function can lead to potassium accumulation. Certain medications, such as ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), potassium-sparing diuretics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can also increase potassium levels. Additionally, conditions like diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, and extensive tissue damage (e.g., from burns or trauma) can contribute to hyperkalemia. Dietary intake of potassium, especially from supplements or high-potassium foods in individuals with compromised kidney function, is another significant risk factor.

The symptoms of hyperkalemia can vary depending on the severity. Mild cases may be asymptomatic, while more severe cases can manifest as muscle weakness, fatigue, nausea, and irregular heartbeats. In critical situations, hyperkalemia can lead to dangerous cardiac arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest. Management of hyperkalämierisiko involves identifying and addressing the underlying causes, adjusting medications, modifying diet, and in some cases, using medications to lower potassium levels or undergoing dialysis. Regular monitoring of potassium levels is particularly important for individuals with known risk factors.
