Hydroxycitrat

Hydroxycitrate is a chemical compound, specifically a derivative of citric acid. It is found naturally in certain plants, most notably in the rind of fruits from the Garcinia genus, such as Garcinia cambogia, Garcinia indica, and Garcinia atroviridis. These fruits are often referred to as tamarinds or malabar tamarinds.

Chemically, hydroxycitrate is known as (–)-hydroxycitric acid or HCA. It exists as three stereoisomers, but the isomer predominantly found in these fruits is the one with the (–) configuration. Its primary active component is believed to be this isomer.

Hydroxycitrate has gained popularity as a dietary supplement, primarily marketed for its potential effects on weight management. The proposed mechanism of action involves inhibiting an enzyme called adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase (ACL). This enzyme plays a role in the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. By inhibiting ACL, it is theorized that the body may convert fewer carbohydrates into fat and potentially increase the production of glycogen, a form of stored energy.

Additionally, some research suggests that hydroxycitrate might influence appetite by affecting serotonin levels in the brain, potentially leading to a feeling of fullness. However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is mixed, with some studies showing modest effects and others finding no significant benefits compared to placebo.
