Hydroxidewater

Hydroxidewater is a nonstandard term that may be encountered in informal writing or fictional contexts to denote water containing a notable amount of hydroxide ions. It is not a discrete chemical compound recognized in mainstream chemistry. When used descriptively, it generally refers to an aqueous solution whose chemistry is dominated by hydroxide (OH−) and the counterions from dissolved bases such as sodium, potassium, or calcium.

In practical terms, hydroxidewater is an alkaline solution. Its major species are OH− and the accompanying cations, with properties depending on concentration and temperature. Typical features include a pH well above 7, high electrical conductivity relative to pure water, and corrosivity to metals and many materials. The exact behavior is governed by the dissolved base and any dissolved CO2 or minerals that can alter pH through buffering.

Occurrence and production: Naturally occurring alkaline waters exist in certain geological environments where minerals release bases into groundwater. Industrially, alkaline water is produced by dissolving strong bases such as sodium or potassium hydroxide in water, or by processes that remove dissolved carbon dioxide to shift equilibria toward hydroxide.

Safety: Hydroxidewater is caustic and can cause chemical burns; handling requires appropriate PPE and proper engineering controls. It reacts with acids in neutralization reactions and can aggravate corrosion.

Applications: Alkaline waters are used in pH control, chemical synthesis, metal processing, and as cleaning or pretreatment fluids. In fiction or speculative contexts, hydroxidewater may be described as possessing unique properties or interactions, but such descriptions are not standard chemical knowledge.
