Hydroanlegg

Hydroanlegg is a term used to describe facilities that convert the energy of flowing or stored water into usable energy, most commonly electricity. They typically comprise structures such as dams or barrage systems, water reservoirs or intakes, penstocks or conduits, turbines, generators, transformers, and the control equipment that coordinates operation and connection to the electric grid. While the phrase is often associated with hydroelectric power plants, hydroanlegg can also include other water-driven infrastructure within energy, industrial, or municipal systems.

There are several main types. Storage or reservoir-based hydroelectric plants use stored water to regulate output and meet demand. Run-of-river plants rely on the natural flow of a river with little or no storage, resulting in lower storage capacity but reduced land use. Pumped-storage plants move water between two reservoirs at different elevations to store energy and provide system stability, releasing water to generate electricity during peak demand and pumping during low demand. Micro, small, and medium-scale hydro installations exist for local power supply, often with simpler infrastructure and smaller environmental footprints.

Operation: Water released from a reservoir or diverted by an intake drives a turbine connected to a generator, which produces electricity fed into the power system. Plant efficiency is typically high, and many installations can respond rapidly to changes in demand. Output depends on water availability, head, and turbine design.

Environmental and social considerations: Hydro projects can affect aquatic habitats, sediment transport, and local communities. Mitigation measures include fish passage facilities, environmental flow requirements, sediment management, and careful site selection and monitoring. Lifecycle aspects include long service lives, regular maintenance, upgrades, and, in some cases, decommissioning.
