Hybridkjøretøy, also known as hybrid vehicles, are motor vehicles that combine a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor. This combination allows the vehicle to operate on either power source alone or on a blend of both. The primary benefit of a hybrid vehicle is improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars.

There are several types of hybrid powertrains. In a parallel hybrid, both the internal combustion engine and the electric motor can power the wheels directly, either independently or together. In a series hybrid, the internal combustion engine acts as a generator to charge the battery or power the electric motor, which then drives the wheels. A series-parallel hybrid, also known as a power-split hybrid, can operate in both series and parallel modes, offering greater flexibility and efficiency. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are a subset of hybrids that have a larger battery pack and can be charged from an external electricity source, allowing for a longer all-electric driving range.

The energy management system in a hybrid vehicle is crucial. It continuously monitors driving conditions and optimizes the use of the electric motor and internal combustion engine to maximize efficiency. During braking, regenerative braking systems capture kinetic energy that would normally be lost as heat and convert it into electrical energy to recharge the battery. This technology plays a significant role in reducing fuel consumption, especially in urban driving environments with frequent stops and starts. Hybrid technology represents a step towards more sustainable transportation, bridging the gap between conventional vehicles and fully electric cars.
