These groups are characterized by their traditional instrumentation and arrangements, often performing songs and dances rooted in Estonian rural culture. The term "huvigrup" translates to "hobby group" in English, reflecting their origins as amateur musical collectives formed by enthusiasts rather than professional musicians.

The roots of huvigrupile can be traced back to the early 20th century, when Estonian folk music experienced a revival following the country’s declaration of independence in 1918. However, the modern form of huvigrupile developed more systematically after World War II, as part of efforts to preserve and promote Estonian cultural identity during the Soviet occupation.
