It is derived from the verb huomioida, meaning “to notice” or “to take into account,” and incorporates the polite particle -han/-hän, which softens commands in Finnish. The phrase is commonly translated into English as “please note” or “please consider.”

Grammatically, huomioitathan is a second-person form bearing a polite emphasis. It is most often used at the start of a sentence or clause to introduce important information, warnings, or instructions. In practice, it signals a courteous tone rather than a plain directive, and it is frequent in written communication such as notices, emails, guidelines, and forms. There are related forms for other persons or levels of formality, for example huomioittehan (you all/you in a formal/collective address) or huomioi (informal singular).

Usage notes include its formality and potential for sounding bureaucratic in casual speech. While common in official or service contexts, it may feel overly formal in informal conversations.
