Hujayras

Hujayras are small, often subterranean chambers historically used for religious seclusion and meditation in various Sufi traditions. The term originates from Arabic, meaning "little room" or "chamber." These spaces are typically very simple, designed to minimize distractions and facilitate deep introspection and spiritual focus. Adherents who enter a hujayra often remain there for extended periods, sometimes days or weeks, abstaining from worldly concerns and dedicating themselves entirely to prayer, remembrance of God (dhikr), and contemplation.

The practice of retreating to a hujayra is a form of spiritual discipline aimed at purifying the heart and soul. It is believed that by withdrawing from the external world, individuals can more effectively connect with the divine and achieve spiritual insights. The physical austerity of the hujayra—often a spartan cell with minimal furnishings—mirrors the spiritual stripping away of ego and attachment to material possessions. While not exclusive to any single Sufi order, the use of hujayras is particularly associated with certain dervish communities and ascetics who prioritize intense personal spiritual practice.
