Hudirritation

Hudirritation refers to irritation of the skin caused by contact with irritants, allergens, or physical factors. It commonly presents with redness, itching, burning, swelling, and dry or flaky skin. The onset is often soon after exposure, but symptoms can persist or recur with repeated contact. In some cases, the skin may crack or form blisters.

Common causes include irritant dermatitis from soaps, detergents, solvents, and cleaning products; allergic contact dermatitis from items such as nickel, fragrances, latex, preservatives, or rubber chemicals; and physical factors like friction, heat, cold, or sun exposure. Occupational exposures and repeated hand washing are frequent contributors. Hudirritation can also occur in people with dry or sensitive skin, or as part of broader conditions such as eczema.

Diagnosis is usually based on the history and physical examination. In uncertain cases, a clinician may perform patch testing to identify specific allergens. Other skin conditions, infections, or systemic diseases may need to be ruled out.

Treatment focuses on removing or reducing exposure to the irritant, protecting the skin, and soothing inflammation. Key steps include gentle cleansing, frequent application of moisturizers, and, when appropriate, short courses of topical corticosteroids for inflammation. Antihistamines may help with itch. Severe or infected cases require medical evaluation and may need prescription medications or wound care.

Prevention involves using protective gloves or barrier creams with irritant exposure, choosing fragrance- and dye-free products, applying moisturizers regularly, and avoiding known triggers. Seek medical advice if irritation worsens, persists beyond a few weeks, covers large areas, or is accompanied by fever or signs of infection.
