Hprofiilit

Hprofiilit, or H-profiilit, are hot-rolled structural steel profiles with an H-shaped cross-section. They consist of two wide, parallel flanges connected by a vertical web, producing a strong, stiff member suitable for bending and axial loads. In Europe they are commonly referred to as HE or H sections and are produced in a family of sizes and proportions. H-profiilit have larger flange width and thicker web compared with standard I-beams, which gives them a higher section modulus and improved stability for long spans and heavy loads.

They are manufactured by hot rolling from structural steel grades such as S235, S275, and S355, with various yield strengths. The shapes are standardized under EN 10034, which provides tables of standard cross-sectional shapes and their geometric properties. In North America they may be referred to as W-shapes or wide-flange beams, but the European HE/H formats are closely related.

Common uses include columns and primary girders in buildings, bridges, and large industrial structures, as well as crane girders and other load-bearing members. Advantages include high stiffness and strength per weight, efficient resistance to bending and buckling, and straightforward connections to flanges and webs. Limitations include higher weight compared with lighter profiles and less suitability for irregular geometries.

Historically, H-profiilit emerged from the need for efficient long-span and heavy-load structural members and are now a standard choice in modern steel construction. Availability and exact dimensions vary by producer and market, but standardized families enable interchange and predictable performance.
