Hostyhdisteinä, often translated as host compounds, refers to molecules that can form non-covalent complexes with other molecules, known as guest compounds. This host-guest chemistry is a fundamental concept in supramolecular chemistry, focusing on the study of molecular recognition and self-assembly. Host molecules are typically designed with specific cavities or binding sites that are complementary in shape, size, and electronic properties to the guest molecule. This complementarity allows for selective binding, where a host molecule will preferentially associate with a particular guest molecule from a mixture.

Common examples of host compounds include cyclodextrins, which are cyclic oligosaccharides with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior, capable of encapsulating a wide range of guest molecules. Crown ethers are another class of host compounds, characterized by a ring of repeating ethylene oxide units that can bind to alkali metal cations. Calixarenes, with their cup-shaped structures, and cryptands, which form cage-like structures, are also well-known host molecules.

The formation of host-guest complexes is driven by various non-covalent interactions, such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic effects. These interactions are relatively weak individually but can become significant when many are present, leading to stable complexes. The study of host-guest systems has numerous applications, including drug delivery, catalysis, molecular sensing, separation technologies, and the development of artificial enzymes. Understanding the principles of host-guest recognition is crucial for designing molecules with specific functions and for mimicking biological processes.
