Hosttarkvara, or host software, refers to software that runs on a computing host to provide services, manage resources, or host other software such as virtual machines or containers. It operates at the host level, distinct from guest software that runs inside virtual machines or containers.

In virtualization environments, hosttarkvara comprises the host operating system and any hypervisor or container runtime that manages guest instances. The host OS provides core services and device drivers, while the hypervisor abstracts hardware for multiple virtual machines. Common examples include Linux with KVM, VMware ESXi, and Microsoft Hyper-V, as well as container runtimes like Docker Engine on a host OS.

In web hosting or service hosting, hosttarkvara includes the web server, database server, mail server, and related management tools installed on the host machine to serve user requests. Admin interfaces, load balancers, and backup systems may also be part of host software deployed on the same host or across a cluster.

Key considerations include security, resource isolation, performance, and maintainability. Updates applied at the host level can affect all hosted guests, so containment and security practices are important, including regular patching, monitoring, and backup strategies. Scalability may involve adding more hosts or transitioning to container-based or cloud-native architectures.

The term is used across IT operations, cloud services, and enterprise infrastructure to describe software components that run directly on the physical or virtual host to enable operations, hosting, or management of other software layers.
