Hochfrequenzinjektion, often abbreviated as HFI, is a medical procedure primarily used for pain management. It involves the targeted injection of a high-frequency electrical current into specific nerves or nerve roots. This electrical current causes a controlled heating of the surrounding tissue, which in turn alters the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and guided by imaging techniques, such as fluoroscopy or ultrasound, to ensure precise placement of the needle. A specialized probe is inserted through the needle, and the high-frequency current is applied for a brief period. The heat generated creates a small lesion on the nerve, disrupting its pain-carrying pathways.
