Hjulhus

Hjulhus is a term used in Nordic automotive terminology to describe the part of a vehicle body that surrounds a wheel and forms the wheel well. It serves to protect wheel components from dirt, water and debris, contribute to the vehicle’s structural rigidity, and provide mounting points for the fender, suspension, and other nearby systems. The design also influences aerodynamics and noise levels.

In modern vehicles, the hjulhus typically comprises an outer wheel arch or fender portion that is visible from the exterior and an inner wheel housing that creates the interior surface of the wheel well. The inner housing often includes a wheel arch liner or protective shield to reduce noise, protect against grime, and aid in drainage. The wheel housing is integrated with the body structure and may be formed as part of the body side, or as a modular component in some architectures.

Materials used for hjulhus include steel, aluminum, and increasingly composite materials, chosen for strength, weight, and corrosion resistance. Manufacturing methods involve stamping, forming, welding and sealing, followed by protective coatings. In some designs, the outer arch and inner housing are separate parts joined during assembly.

Key design considerations for the hjulhus include durability against road debris and corrosion, protection of brake and suspension components, ease of maintenance, and control of aerodynamic drag and road noise. Proper sealing, drainage, and compatibility with wheel and tire sizes are important for performance and longevity.
