Hjemmeservice is a municipal public service in Denmark (and in some other Scandinavian countries) designed to help residents live at home rather than in institutional care. It is typically targeted at elderly people, individuals with chronic illness or disability, and others needing assistance with daily activities. The aim is to support independence, safety, and quality of life while reducing the need for hospitalization or placement in care homes.

The scope varies by municipality but commonly includes housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and ironing, as well as practical support like grocery shopping, meal preparation, and errands. In some places it also covers light home maintenance and safety measures to prevent accidents. Personal care and nursing are usually handled by separate services, such as hjemmepleje.

Access is generally via an application to the municipal social services, followed by an assessment of the person’s needs. A care or service plan is prepared in collaboration with the user and, if relevant, family members. Services are regularly reviewed and adjusted.

Funding is primarily public, financed through taxes, with some level of user co-payment that varies by jurisdiction. Eligibility depends on assessed need and can be limited by resources or budget constraints.

Quality and regulation are overseen by national or local authorities, with standards for professional qualifications, safety, and client rights. Challenges can include wait times, regional differences, and balancing autonomy with care needs.
