Process and criteria: Researchers select past cases with comparable causal structures, actors, institutions, or structural pressures. They construct a mirror timeline and compare sequences of events, triggers, responses, and outcomes. Qualitative narrative comparison is common, with quantitative coding or timeline visualization as a complement. The aim is not to predict with certainty but to illuminate plausible dynamics and cautions.
